Blaire and Armani, a couple at a carnival, get on a Ferris wheel while Armani talks enthusiastically about food while Blaire uses her phone.
ARMANI
…And basically, that’s why when you’re making the chicken, you always have to make sure the pan’s hot before you add the oil or…hey are you even listening to me?
BLAIRE
(Without looking away from phone)
Yeah, you cook the oil in the pan or whatever.
Armani sighs. As they make their way up, Armani seems to fidget more and more, looking over at Blaire to see if she was still looking at her phone.
BLAIRE
(still without looking away from phone)
Can you stop moving, you’re shaking the gondola.
Armani stops moving and sighs again. They begin to make their descent. He looks around, trying to find ways to entertain himself. He stares at the birds in the sky, flying freely while he was stuck in a gondola, not being able to move.
They start going back up again.
Armani begins fidgeting again, and peaking over at Blaire, while she stares at her screen, scrolling endlessly.
ARMANI
It’s pretty nice up here, actually-
BLAIRE
(turning away from him)
Hold on I need to hear this.
While Blaire puts the phone up to her ears, Armani stops fidgeting and stares blankly into the sky. He no longer looks around for entertainment and doesn’t peek over at Blaire to see what she’s doing.
After the next revolution around the Ferris wheel, they finally stop the ride. The light of Blaire’s phone suddenly shuts off, and she begins banging at it in vain. She sighs and looks over at Armani. He’s looking straight ahead as they walk around the carnival.
Blaire reaches for his hand to hold, but he makes no effort to hold it back.
BLAIRE
What’s your problem?
ARMANI
I think we should break up
