Anxiety and the Law of Attraction


I rememeber for years I would hear people talk about the law of attraction, but I never knew what what anyone was referring to. I wrote it off as mystical child talk, like one might think about astrology or even alchemy. I never looked into it, never believed it would apply to me or my life, and so I ignored it every time anyone would bring it up.

That was until I was listening to the Know Thyself podcast, that I decided to pay attention a little. What they said about the law of attraction was different than what I had expected, and was much more rooted in reality than I had thought it to be. From this podcast, I also learned to not write off things like astrology and alchemy as nonsense either, as I knew nothing about them in the first place, but that’s a conversation for another day.

I believe that many people, including myself, write off the law of attraction because of how its described on social media and in surface level spiritual/philosophical conversations. What many people believe the law of attraction is, is that if you focus on the things you want, and you make it a point to add “I don’t chase, I attract” to it, you will receive whatever it is you want as a gift from the universe. That, of course, sounds like a sweet deal, to imagine the world you want, and things falling into place for you, however, that is only half the truth. Many people stop there, never diving any deeper, never doing the work to put anything in motion, and believing they will receive the things they desire.

The real law of attraction is essentially this. The things that you pay attention to and allow into your subconcious affect your thoughts, which controls your feelings, that lead to your actions. The first part of the mainstream law of attraction is mostly correct. When you imagine the world you desire, and think about it intentionally and with positive passion, you will begin to notice a shift in your reality, but that is caused by the fact that you are now looking at the world differently. But what happens when we pay attention to the negative aspects of our lives, the places where we don’t add up, the places in which we feel lack?

Our reality is made up of our perception of it. Two people going through the same experience might come out of it with a different perception of what actually happened and that is all caused by mindset. A person who pays attention to the negative aspects of every situation, will naturally view the majority of situations as negative. When you view every situation as negative, what happens then is that you attach this negative feeling with those situations, and when you attach negative feeling to every situation, what this causes is a feeling of dread and anxiety to life. When life is filled with dread and anxiety, you are perpetually locked in a mode of fight or flight (flight attached to avoidence and dread and fight attached to anxiety), and this affects your actions. You will ignore new opportunities that might lead to the life you want, or even worse, you might fight them off entirely.

On the flip side, if you allow more positivity into your conciousness, focus and think on the things you want to achieve or recieve, this creates postive feelings attached to your experiences, which leads to anticipation and energy instead of anxiety and dread. Once you begin to think intentionally about the life that you want for yourself, about the people you want in your life, about the future you desire, you begin to perceive the ways to get it, and with this newfound energy and anticipation, you can now put in more effort to get it. You will no longer ignore the opportunities to get a better job, you will no longer fight off the connections needed to create the a better environment, you will no longer dread the work you have to put in the get a better life and through that, you will begin to attract all the things that you desire in life because you are no longer blocking them from yourself.

I’m not promising immediate change and that you will now receive that new job, or a perfect relationship overnight, but it may change how you go about gaining them. Through the law of attraction, you might notice that individual who is has been trying to get your attention that you were too afraid to persue, or that job opportunity that you dreaded because you thought about all the ways that it could go wrong, and you might even grow to realizr that the life that you’ve been desiring has been all around you all along, you just couldn’t see it through a lense of negativity.
